To mark the auspicious occasion of our 5th annual Hike for Mental Health, the club is combining hiking forces with a former White Plains Kiwanis member who moved to Ithaca but will always be a friend to this club. Karen will be hiking 100 miles on the Appalachian Trail in Maine to Mount Katahdin a few days prior to the Cranberry Lake Preserve hike the club is doing on September 27th.

We also decided to honor the lives of three special loved ones who struggled with mental illness and died by suicide, Alex earlier this year; Michael and Marc a few years ago. Whether fresh or ever-lingering, our grief fuels our determination to support the worthy cause of supporting scientific research and programs aimed at alleviating suffering from mental illness. The spirit and character of these people will be celebrated always, their families and friends’ lives enriched by having known them:

Alex Muzio was a true family guy, he loved his girls, the great outdoors, nature, animals, and listening to his music. He was very creative and enjoyed playing the guitar.

Michael Harrington was a ray of energy and creativity who loved living in the mountains and white-water kayaking. He thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2005.

Marc Sindell was a generous and gentle soul who cared deeply about others. He enjoyed photography, swimming, and long, contemplative walks outdoors.

Details about the group hike at Cranberry Lake Preserve, located at 1609 Old Orchard St, West Harrison, NY:

We are meeting on September 27th at noon, rain or shine, and are allowing two hours for the hike. We will decide which trail or combination of trails to explore on the day of the event depending on the weather. The perimeter red trail loop is the longest, and only 2.4 miles. The terrain has very gentle slopes with occasional muddy parts by the lake, a few rocks and roots, and has a combination of both wide and narrow sections of trail. Note that dogs are not allowed, and we must carry out what we carry in. This is a designated biodiversity reserve area with a rich history including some remains of a 19th century farmhouse. The 190-acre preserve hosts a variety of habitats including a four-acre lake, cliffs, mixed hardwood forest, vernal pools, and a swamp. Over 100 years ago, the high-quality gneiss rock in this place was quarried to complete the Kensico Dam.

Thanks cousin Karen! I have fond memories of Alex ( his uncle). Everything said about him is so true. I was impressed by him holding on for years along with his brother Andy, a couple of stuffed swan I gave them. Fr Chris Gibson
