Goal is $500

$450 donated

I chose to join a hike with HIKE for Mental Health to help bring attention to conditions that are often otherwise invisible.  As a group, we hope to stamp out the stigma of mental illness and conserve wilderness trails. I hike for my mother, a vibrant person who immigrated to the US from Brazil.  Pregnancy at 40 changed her biochemistry and I never knew the person she was before.  The drugs she was given had debilitating side effects, so I’m supporting research on better solutions.  Time in the wilderness soothes my souls, so trail conservation is important to me.  Please consider making a donation, leaving a message, or sharing this page.  Thank you.

  1. Yes, unfortunately, 1 in 4 families are affected by some sort of mental illness, and most of them are successfully treated with today’s medicines. Every person reacts differently to different medications. Many have to try several different treatments before finding the one that works for them. Today’s medications are far and away improved form those of yesteryear. I know of physicians who today specialize in psychopharmacology and have been very successful in finding the right medication for those individuals suffering from mental illness. However, more research is always welcomed, and I will happily support your hike for mental health.

Thank you for doing this, Newton. Like so many other families, my family has been deeply and profoundly affected by mental illness. I fully support the research and development of more accurate and effective means of diagnosis and treatment. Our loved ones and everyone else deserve better. You rock, Newton! ❤️
