Project Timeline: August 2026 – July 2027
Direction: West to East (Point Reyes, CA to Cape Henlopen, DE)

1. Executive Summary
The American Discovery Trail (ADT) is the nation’s only non-motorized, coast-to-coast trail system. Unlike traditional wilderness-only trails, the ADT uniquely cuts directly through the heart of America’s major metropolitan hubs.
“Zeus in the Wild” is a 5,000-mile, West-to-East thru-hike with a dual mission: to push the limits of human endurance, and to bridge the gap between wilderness isolation and urban mental health crises. As the expedition moves through major cities along the route (including San Francisco, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Washington D.C.), the project will pivot from backcountry hiking to street-level journalism. We will conduct raw, compassionate interviews with unhoused individuals to document their stories of trauma, tragedy, and resilience, distributing the content globally across all major video platforms.
2. The Mission & Social Impact
Homelessness and mental health crises are intimately linked to deep-seated trauma and tragedy. However, those experiencing it are often looked past or ignored. By utilizing the ADT’s unique urban-wilderness blend, this project aims to:
-
Humanize the Crisis: Put faces and names to the statistics by letting unhoused individuals tell their own stories in their own words.
-
Destigmatize Mental Illness: Normalize conversations around severe psychological trauma and the lack of accessible mental health resources.
-
Drive Action: Channel digital media attention toward local shelters and mental health non-profits in each major city along the route.
3. Content & Media Strategy
This expedition is a high-yield content engine designed for massive digital engagement. Videos will be produced and optimized for all major platforms:
-
Long-Form Documentaries (YouTube): Bi-weekly, high-production-value episodes balancing the brutal realities of a 5,000-mile thru-hike with deep-dive, 10-to-15-minute interviews with urban subjects.
-
Short-Form Storytelling (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts): Daily, hard-hitting, emotional clips focusing on specific, powerful quotes and moments from the street interviews.
-
Real-Time Engagement: Live-streaming from the trail and interactive town-hall updates on community-building platforms.
4. What We Are Asking For
To successfully execute this 10-to-12 month expedition, we are seeking partners for monetary funding and crucial “in-kind” donations.
A. Financial Sponsorship ($20,000 Target)
Monetary donations will directly fund daily trail subsistence, high-bandwidth mobile data plans for massive video uploads, editing software, and—crucially—direct compensation/care packages for the unhoused individuals who share their time and stories.
B. In-Kind Donations & Support
-
Survival & Ultralight Backpacking Gear: High-performance tents, sleep systems, weather-resistant apparel, and durable trail footwear (anticipating 4–5 pairs worn out).
-
Technology & Mobile Journalism Equipment: Lightweight mobile gimbals, rugged external microphones, solar charging arrays, high-capacity power banks, and weather-proof storage options.
-
Logistical Support: Mobile hotspots, satellite communication/SOS subscriptions, shipping logistics for gear swaps, or regional hotel/hostel stays for intensive video editing days.
5. Sponsor Benefits & Deliverables
As a partner, your brand will be woven directly into a high-emotion, socially conscious narrative. Depending on the level of support, deliverables include:
-
Product Integration & Field Testing: Your gear or tech will be field-tested through the ultimate crucible—a 5,000-mile cross-country trek. We will provide dedicated video reviews and organic product placement in daily content.
-
Logo & Brand Placement: Prominent placement on the expedition website, video intro/outro slates, and social media banners.
-
Dedicated Title Sponsorship: ZeusintheWild inclusion on long-form YouTube episodes.
-
Content Licensing: Rights to repurpose high-quality trail footage and photography for your brand’s own marketing and corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaigns.
6. About the Creator / Contact Info
Like anyone strolling down State Street with money to burn, I once lived a “normal” life too. A master’s degree in English and a decades-long career as a technical writer ensured consistent employment and general happiness. That got boring. Interested in obtaining a different perspective, I spent every last dime I had and ditched my overpriced luxury vehicle 20-miles into the desert in favor of a little growth. What I found was so appalling that turning a blind eye was not an option.
One night in the cold with little more than a hoodie was enough to seek shelter by any means necessary. That brought me to the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission (SBRM). For over sixty years, the SBRM has offered a path to healing for broken people seeking relief from the various traumas and tragedies that brought them to such a place. While these words may sound promising, the reality of things is far worse.
That pushed me to act in favor of both the homeless and the mentally ill, and I hope it does the same for others.
