Please join me and my father in spirit for the 2025 Mt. Eisenhower Hike for Mental Health.
Mr. Chapman was an Ivy League-educated scholar, an All-American swimmer, and a loving father of three young children who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1966 while working on his thesis in Greek at the University of Michigan. After he lost his ability to thrive, he lost his career, his family and his future. My father was taken away from us while we were still a very young family. But I reunited with him later in life and became his guardian in 2009, managing all aspects of his person and estate. A multitude of healthcare professionals over the years enabled him to preserve what little of his dignity remained. Mr. Chapman passed away in May 2025 at the age of 88 after nearly 60 years of institutionalization.
In his youth, Mr. Chapman was an avid outdoorsperson. He was a camp counselor at several camps in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New Hampshire. Throughout high school and college, he excelled in soccer, swimming and other sports. He twice qualified as an All-American swimmer and set numerous scholastic records in the individual medley, butterfly and backstroke events.
Mr. Chapman specialized in classical history and languages. After earning his Masters in Latin at Columbia University he attended the Virgilian School in Italy and the Institute for Classical Studies in Athens, Greece. In his early career he taught at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey and was the Chairman of the Classical Languages departments at the Maumee Country Day School in Ohio and later at Episcopal Academy in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He also coached soccer and tennis and was involved in numerous community and professional associations before his illness overtook any hope for his future.
